Well, it’s a bit early for New Year resolutions and all that, but I had a bit of time today so here goes anyway.

I was ordered to clean up my ‘gaming room’ today. Actually, to be honest, the gaming room privilege was removed upon the birth of no. 2, but over the months the cupboard I was banished to has grown to the point where there was a full infestation of the immediate area again

While sorting through I came across all sorts of projects that I have started over the last couple of years but not actually finished. This is very naughty and must stop – it’s no wonder Santa is not bringing me any new gaming stuff this year

I’m going to try hard not to start any major new projects next year but actually finish what I have on the go. I’ve also been inspired by the story of Hercules so I’m going to break down what I need to do into 12 Labours that I must complete in order to redeem myself. Each one is to take a month and must be finished in that time frame. The results will be published in this thread. I’m hoping that might inspire me to get these jobs done or face the inevitable public ridicule from Dreads and Eragon

So, without further ado, and in no particular order, I present The 12 Labours of NoB

1) Defend a village, a Chief and its King: Ages ago when we were making themed Warmahordes terrain I started a TrollBlood Village. I’ve also got Chief Madrack with some trollblood infantry and the Mountain King on the go. All need finishing.

2) Establish a base on a Cradle world : I’ve got about 3K of PHR base coated. It really needs finishing and a force of this size needs a base. The game I played with Steve S on my yellow terrain board was pretty, but the urban buildings didn’t look quite right. Some futuristic buildings will complement the gaming board and my newest army.

3) Recruit allies to retake the Earth : The PHR have the technology but not the numbers. Through careful negotiation an alliance will be formed to eliminate the Scourge from the Big ‘Uns. A second faction will be needed. Ok – it’s a new project but I’m loving my DZC and if I love a game 2 factions are a must.

4) Master the art of Urban warfare. I’ve started building some Hawk Resin buildings and I want to finish enough for a decent table. Also a long time ago I purchased and/or cast out the materials to make an urban battlezone. I’m going to try and use this stuff to make a set of modular terrain tiles flexible enough to play DZC, Infinity, 40K or any other urban style game.

5) Tame the Beauty and the Beast: I seem to have become stuck in the Warp when it comes to painting my Dark Eldar. I’m determined to finish my Haemonculus Coven which will include some nice Forgeworld transports and Raging Heroes Sci Fi Vestigals.

6) Survive the Post Apocalyse : I should have the Eden kickstarter before Xmas. I quite like the look of the new Askari faction. As there are some exclusive miniatures and terrain elements in the kickstarter it would be rude not to do some thing with them. Hopefully we can get the Eden Campaign going again and I can lead the giant muties to victory!

7) Conquer the Galaxy – Some of you will remember the Ultimate 40K Campaign – you know, the one where we played Epic, 40K and BFG as part of a bigger picture. This idea still appeals to me. I have been tempted to sell my Lords of Decay but as I have the Epic and 40K components complete I only need a BFG fleet to finish the project. I quite fancy doing this and maybe playing some linked games again.

8) Secure bridgehead on Paradiso: I’ve been drooling over many of the recent Infinity releases. So much potential, but so much patience needed to master the blimmin’ rules! I plan to dig out my Combined Army and add some much needed depth to it. Perhaps I can persuade Eragon (or others) to get some miniatures done and play a short campaign to get used to the system again – possibly even the Paradiso system. It will also mean I get some more use out of the urban terrain stuff I’ve started on.

9) Cross The Breach and raise an army of the dead!: I’ve got a Malifaux Ressers force partially done but the Warmhordes craze wiped this system off the radar for me. McMourning and his crew deserve some attention and I would like to remind myself of how the game works. I also have some nice Malifaux style buildings and terrain that I bought that never got used so that’s another good reason to cross back over The Breach.

10) Battle for Alabaster : I’m hoping my Sedition Wars stuff will be arriving some time early January. I’m determined not to make the same mistake with this as the other board games I have bought i.e. straight in the loft and never played. A call to Ken on this one . . . . let’s not let that happen! Perhaps we can each choose one side of the coin for a painting partnership and then battle it out for Alabaster with painted miniatures like real men

11) Lead the charge of the Mumaks. The scene from the Pelennor fields when a line of Mumaks walk straight over the Rohan is one of my favourite fantasy genre moments. During my brief foray into War of the Ring I accumulated a handful of Mumaks and I still hanker for that feeling of power as I trample all before me in a tsunami of pachyderm rage. It must be done in 2013, along with finishing the rest of my Haradrim army!

12) To be decided. Ok, I’m going to leave the last Labour open – I know I shouldn’t but there will be something cool I have forgotten or an unmissable release next year. Best leave room for just one more pie . . .

Wish me luck guys!

Revenge of the Dark Eldar

Posted: September 20, 2012 in 40k, Dark Eldar, Gaming

Recently had a return match against the Chaos army who narrowly defeated my Dark Eldar last time.
Another good game but this time the Dark Eldar dominated and walked away as winners with minimal casualties.
I feel as though I’m getting back to grips with the Dark Eldar and I’m enjoying 6th.

Dark Eldar take on Chaos

Posted: August 29, 2012 in Dark Eldar, Gaming

Had a stonking game of 40K this weekend just gone. 1500 points of Dark Eldar versus 1500 points of Chaos Marines in the Relic scenario.

The game had a number of comedy moments including an Obliterator shooting a plasma cannon into a swirling melee nearly taking out his Daemon Prince commander, and then a Wrack nabbing the relic only to run off when his mates were wiped out dropping it along the way. Golden stuff but you had to be there to appreciate it.
Anyway I really enjoyed the game and seem to be getting into the swing of the new rules. In the end the Chaos scum won on the secondary objective of first blood. It just goes to show it is important play aggressively in the new improved 40K ruleset. Looking forward to some more soon.

I’ve working on some Wracks recently. For these guys I have tried to create a horrific sinister feel but also tried to use the purple and brass colours that appeared on the Wyches I have done previously. I’m quite pleased with these but have to say I didn’t enjoy dealing with finecast.

There are a few interesting techniques I’ve used on these including blood and gore with Uhu glue and Tamiya colours, and vallejo water effect plus day-glo paint. I may take some pics of these in progress next time.

40K 6th – A second game

Posted: July 19, 2012 in 40k, Dark Eldar, Gaming

Had a second game of 6th this week. No pictures as I forgot to take any. The game was a pretty good model of how 6th Edition tournaments will work with 1750pts on each side and most of the rules in the book in use apart from scenary placement.

My opponent took a dirty combo of Dark Angels with Guard allies. It was a well thought out list designed to win games and it did not disappoint. The important thing for me was just to get back a bit further into the 40K groove and learn more about 6th.

Played an eventful first game of 6th Edition 40K tonight. I left my Rulebook behind but luckily remembered most of the new rules and was rescued by a spare copy being made available!

The game itself was experimental in that we just put two 1750pt forces on the table and clashed them together to try the rules out. The seems not too different to 5th edition but there are notable changes in the detail.

Firstly, melee and shooting is more complicated and time consuming. However I feel it is more realistic and introduced more tactical positioning into the game. Secondly, flyers have a new set of rules which makes them much harder to take down but at the expense of some of their manoeuvreability – I liked how this played out in practice and it made more sense in terms of the realism of flyers in the game. Thirdly, assault infantry are going to find the going tougher in this edition due to transports becoming squisher (see next point) and over-watch. Finally, it’s quite clear that vehicles, apart from flyers, are going to be easier to take out – this is going to be frustrating to begin, with but I believe will be good for the game in the long run.

I enjoyed getting my Dark Eldar out after a year off the gaming table and will certainly be playing some more 40K. I don’t intend to play as competitively as I might have done in the past – I think Warmahordes is better for that – but I think I will enjoy exploring the new options and painting more of the rather lovely models. Overall it’s a thumbs up from me for the new rules
